Well, it’s getting extra toasty in Texas, which means that many families are seeking refuge and relief in their backyard pools. Diving into that cool water just never sounded better. But before you do the same, you’ll want to ensure your pool truly is a great escape (and won’t turn into a major mistake) by making safety a top priority.

And we’re not just talking about not leaving kids unattended, using sunscreen, or walking—not running—around the pool. Day-to-day maintenance also plays a huge role in pool safety. Because, believe it or not, improperly handling pool chemicals, cleaning equipment, and maintenance, in general, can make the last thing on your mind this summer (fire, explosions, and non-water-related injuries) become a devastating reality.

So, what can you do to keep your pool fire-hazard free? Here are 5 tips to get you started:

  1. Clear the area of the pool heater of debris, trash, and chemicals. Also, make sure you clear any vegetation growing on the top of the heater.
  2. Remove debris, like leaves, branches, etc., from the equipment area.
  3. Store hazardous pool chemicals in their properly-sealed containers. Place these containers in an area that will not be affected by weather conditions.
  4. Inspect all of the electric conduits of your pool equipment for damages on a regular basis, and contact a certified professional to replace them as needed.
  5. Check that the inside of your pool heater, chiller, etc. is clear of rodent nests at least once a year.
