We have customers always ask us whether they need to clean their pool filter, and our response is always YES! But just how often should your swimming pool filter be cleaned, and why? We’ve got all these answers and more below.

CLEANING POOL FILTERS: THE WHY

Think of it this way: The state of your filter is the state of your pool. Without a clean, properly functioning filter, your pool will slowly but surely become contaminated, accumulating bacteria, algae, phosphates, debris, and more — all things that can make you sick and make your pool water look anything but crystal clean.

On the flip side, a clean filter — you guessed it — equals a cleaner pool with better filtration year-round. Not only does clearing it out result in less build-up, but it allows the filter to do its job, reducing the amount of contaminants and phosphates that enter your pool and enabling pool chemicals to function as designed. In other words, a clean filter makes your pool healthier all around, and it shows in its chemistry and aesthetic.

Not to mention, taking the time to clean your pool filter regularly can save you money! Yep. Filters that are regularly cleaned don’t have to be replaced as often. They also reduce the likelihood of extra expenses such as phosphate and algae treatments. Long story short: Clean your filter. It’ll make your life easier both now and in the long run.

CLEANING POOL FILTERS: HOW OFTEN?

It depends on the filter! Generally, we recommend professional filter cleanings 3 times a year, but actions should be taken to ensure your filter functions properly every month. More specifically:

-DE filters must be cleared out by completing a monthly backwash and cleaned at least every 4 months.

-Sand filters need to be cleared out by completing a monthly backwash, and their media need to be replaced every 5-10 years.

-Cartridge filters need to be cleaned at least every four months.

OTHER PRO TIPS FOR SPRING CLEANING…AND SWIMMING

-Before using your pool for the first time this season, be sure to clean your filter.

-Cleaning your filter is still just as important in the spring and winter months as it is in the summer. Beyond ridding your pool of filth, a clean filter will optimize your pool’s circulation level. This will expedite the heating process so that you can actually enjoy your pool despite the chilly temps.
